ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Asexual reproduction is mode of reproduction in which new individuals produces from single parents .
or, The mode of reproduction in new organisms produces without fusion of male gamete and female gamete .
The term 'Apomixix ' is also used for Asexual Reproduction .
CHARACTERISTICS OF ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
I. it involves only a single parent.
ii. Gametes are not formed ,hence no fertilization occurs .
iii. the cell division may be mitotic or amitotic .
iv. The individuals formed are genetically identical to the parent, i.e ., they are clones .
v. The term clone is given to such morphologically and Genetically similar individuals.
vi. Multiplication occurs rapidly.
OCCURANCE
Asexual reproduction occurs commonly in :
-single celled organisms like monerans (bacteria) and Protists like Amoeba & paramecium
- some plants like algae and animals like hydra and Sponges with relatively simple organisation .
- Member of kingdom fungi like yeast and Penicillium.
- A number of higher plants in the form of vegetative reproduction.
Asexual reproduction is absent in higher invertebrate and all vertebrate
